DESIGNING FOR WELL-BEING

For as long as I can remember, my mood has always been affected by my surroundings, my space, my home. Designing for well-being means creating a restorative nest that supports you and allows you to feel calm and content.

A RESTORATIVE NEST THAT SUPPORTS YOU AND ALLOWS YOU TO FEEL CALM + CONTENT.

For approximately 200,000 years, humans developed in nature. It’s only in roughly the past few hundred years that we have made a shift from spending 90% of our time outdoors to spending 90% of our time indoors. So it is no surprise that as humans, we are actually programmed to respond to the natural world around us. There is a design philosophy called Biophilia which suggests that we actually have a genetic connection to the natural world. All of this adds up to why earthy colours, natural materials and texture is at the heart of designing for well-being.

Creating a holistic home that encourages better well-being is something that now more than ever is so important. I feel that it is important to consider the space we create for ourselves at home to assist and support our well-being. If you are thinking of creating a Holistic Home, these are the designing for well-being principles: flow, natural + pocket lighting, aromatherapy, sound, texture, earthy palettes, natural materials + outside/in. Creating a holistic home is by no means all about aesthetic, it's really about a sensation, a feeling and the connection of the mind, body and soul

MY HOLISTIC HOME

When friends come over to my place they always say how calm they feel. I have created my own holistic home and I truly do feel supported, calm and content in my space and so want to share my message to help others do the same. I created the designing for well-being principles which have been drawn from different areas of design: Biophilia, my own creative intuition, designers and the Earth itself. Creating a holistic home isn't about going out and spending a ton of money on new stuff, it is about decluttering, creating flow, working with what you have and then assessing what you need to add in order to take your space from a house to a restorative nest. My space is by no means perfect, and I am continually assessing it and adapting it to fit my needs, but I wanted to share some images to give you a feel of what my holistic home looks like.
